The 2023-24 Budget has been announced, and it comes with good news for aged care in Australia. With an overall spend of $36 billion in aged care, the Albanese Government is committed to restoring dignity and respect to older Australians. This budget has been designed to make significant improvements in aged care services, ensuring that older Australians receive the care and attention they deserve. One of the most notable changes is the largest ever pay rise for aged care workers, which demonstrates a commitment to valuing the dedication and skill of the aged care workforce.
Largest Ever Pay Rise for Aged Care Workers in 2023-24 Budget
The Australian Government has recognised the value of the aged care workforce by investing $11.3 billion to fund the Fair Work Commission’s decision for a 15% pay increase. This marks the largest pay increase for aged care workers ever and will help providers retain and attract staff.
The Government will invest in the workers’ advancement through the National Worker Registration Scheme, engaging with aged care, health, and training sectors ($59.5m).
A new regulatory model and prudential framework will be established through a $72.3 million investment to improve quality and safety and restore trust and confidence. The new model will be complemented by actions to enhance food and nutrition reporting, dining experiences, monthly care statements, star ratings, and the Quality Indicator program ($152.8m).
The Government will provide 9,500 additional Home Care Packages to support older Australians’ desire to receive aged care and live independently in their own homes for longer. A new Aged Care Taskforce will be established to review funding arrangements and make the system fair and equitable for all Australians.
The Government will also develop systems to help older people choose their residential care provider, provide better access to high-quality primary care, and support the viability of aged care providers in rural and remote areas.
Additionally, funding will be provided to address the shocking inequity of providers of culturally safe care for First Nations elders being funded less than other mainstream providers. The Budget will also support Aboriginal Controlled Organisations to build the capacity to provide care in the Country ($59.7m).
